St. John’s, Newfoundland – Ben Gillard, a renowned painter, writer, poet, singer, and musician from Newfoundland, has tragically passed away at the age of 77.
Gillard succumbed to cancer after a brief and courageous battle, leaving behind a legacy that touched both the local and international arts communities.
Originally from Englee on Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula, Gillard had made significant contributions to the arts throughout his life.
His works have been featured across the globe, including in Europe, South America, Australia, Canada, and the Far East.
Gillard was honored by several prestigious associations such as the National Art Association (CaRFAC) and the Provincial Associations (CARNAL), reflecting his impact on the artistic landscape.
A heartfelt social media post from Gillard’s family announced his death, expressing deep sorrow: “It’s with deepening sorrow, agonizing & bone crushing heartache, the announcement of my father Ben Gillard (age 77) has left this world, those shoes will never be filled.”
Gillard’s sister-in-law, Lucy Noonan, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses, with a goal of raising $15,000 for the service, transportation, and headstone.
