Salem, New Hampshire – Bill James, a highly respected wrestling and cross-country coach at Methuen High School, tragically passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, leaving a community in mourning.
James, originally from Salem, NH, was renowned for his contributions as a coach and physical education teacher over the course of a distinguished career.
His legacy is etched into the lives of countless athletes, colleagues, and students who had the privilege of working with him.
James suffered a debilitating neck injury in September 2023, after a tragic fall at his home, which left him paralyzed.
Despite this heartbreaking turn of events, his impact on the Methuen High School community continued to resonate.
With over 500 career wins, including more than 400 at Methuen, Coach James was hailed as one of the most successful coaches in Massachusetts high school history.
His athletes and peers remember him not only for his achievements but for his deep commitment to personal growth and sportsmanship.
In 2012, he led his wrestling team to a state championship, a crowning moment in his storied career.
A flood of tributes poured in on social media, with Gary Leavitt reminiscing, “He was dedicated, loyal, and respected… Rest in peace, Bill James, ole chum!”
Paul Lawrence McGovern added, “He was one of a kind… may Bill rest in peace.”
