Burlington, NC – The Burlington community is mourning the loss of 15-year-old Malik Mebane, a passionate high school football player at Cummings High School. Malik tragically passed away on the evening of September 23, 2024, after becoming unconscious during football practice earlier that day. Despite efforts to save him, Malik succumbed to a medical emergency at the hospital.
Malik, known for his love of football, his family, and his culinary skills, was adored by many. His sudden passing has left family members, friends, and the broader community heartbroken.
In response to Malik’s death, a fundraiser organized by Tonya Mebane has been launched to honor his legacy and assist with burial costs. The fundraiser has so far raised $250 toward a goal of $7,300. The community is showing their support, with donations coming from individuals like Sheritta Michael, who contributed $100, and Anthony Lawson, who donated $30. Others have also offered smaller amounts, all in an effort to help Malik’s family through this difficult time.
The loss has prompted heartfelt tributes on social media. Visitors’ Chapel CC shared a touching post, expressing the community’s grief over the loss of Malik and 7-year-old Mason Jenkins, who also recently passed away. The post read, “The loss of these two young kings has been profoundly difficult to process, leaving us all struggling to make sense of it.” The post continued with a prayer for peace, strength, and comfort for the grieving families and community.
Others, such as Joyce Wharton, Cynthia Wright Faucette, and Dianna Haith, echoed their sentiments, responding with a simple yet powerful "Amen" to the post, showing their solidarity during this time of mourning.
