Carolyn Dona Mayfield, Beloved Educator and Librarian from Cherokee, AL, Dies at 84

Carolyn Dona Mayfield, a cherished member of the Cherokee, Alabama community, and a devoted educator, passed away on September 20, 2024, at the age of 84. Her life was marked by a commitment to education and family, attributes warmly remembered by all who knew her.

Carolyn’s career in the Muscle Shoals school system spanned over three decades, where she began as an elementary teacher before transitioning to a librarian. Her dedication to student growth and her love for her co-workers were evident throughout her service.

Beyond her professional life, Carolyn was known for her generosity and kindness. "Carolyn was generous and a very sweet person. She always had comforting, cheerful, and encouraging words and a beautiful smile," shared a community member on social media, reflecting the sentiment of many.

Survived by her children, Bobby, John, and Suzanne, and numerous grandchildren and a great-granddaughter, Carolyn’s legacy is notably marked by the love and guidance she extended towards her family. Her home was a hub of warmth and encouragement, enriched by her spirited involvement in their lives.

Carolyn’s family is being assisted by the Colbert Memorial Funeral Home. A private service will be held to honor her life and contributions. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause dear to Carolyn.

Her passing is a profound loss to the Cherokee community and to the many lives she touched. She leaves behind a legacy of love, education, and community service that will be cherished and remembered by all.
