Cleveland, Ohio – Dan Coughlin, the celebrated sportswriter and sportscaster, has passed away at the age of 86 on Sunday, October 6, 2024.
Coughlin was a towering figure in Cleveland sports media, having worked in the field for over six decades.
Known for his warmth and ability to connect with fans and athletes alike, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
His passing was announced on WJW Channel 8, where Coughlin spent the final 41 years of his illustrious career.
He had just completed coverage of the St. Edward-Saint Ignatius high school football game for Fox 8’s "Friday Night Touchdown" two days before his death.
Born in 1938, Dan Coughlin began his career as a sportswriter for The Plain Dealer in 1964 and later worked for the now-defunct Cleveland Press.
He transitioned to television in 1983, where he became a beloved figure in local sports reporting.
Over the years, Coughlin covered major sports events and even called Cleveland Indians games in the 1990 season.
In 1996, he was inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2017, he was honored by the Press Club of Cleveland Hall of Fame.
Fans and colleagues expressed their condolences on social media.
