David George Weakland, a highly respected mason and national arm-wrestling champion from Arkport, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 20, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 49 years old.
Born on July 18, 1975, David Weakland built a legacy both in his professional life and through his numerous passions. He was a graduate of Canisteo High School and BOCES, where he honed his craft in masonry. He eventually founded his own business, David Weakland Masonry, where his craftsmanship was highly regarded. Outside of his professional life, David was known for his diverse hobbies, which included hunting, fishing, painting, jiu jitsu, and brewing homemade beer and wine.
David’s family shared fond memories of his larger-than-life personality, his protective nature, and his love for indulging his sweet tooth. His children affectionately referred to him as "Pooh Bear" for his endearing habit of devouring jars of honey. He was also a talented painter, capturing the beauty of wildlife with his massive hands.
As a national arm-wrestling champion, David’s accomplishments in the sport were admired across the country. Despite his competitive success, he always prioritized his family, cherishing time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
David is survived by his wife Sasha Rigas, his parents George and Cynthia Weakland, his children MacKenna, Brett, and Kaeden, and his grandchildren Layna and Luka Plummer, among others. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Brown & Powers Funeral Home in Canisteo, NY.
