Denmark, Wisconsin – David Selner, a revered dairy scientist and former Denmark High School graduate, passed away on October 25, 2024, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
His passing has left a deep void in the dairy industry and his community, where his lifelong contributions and leadership continue to be celebrated.
David Selner was born on August 31, 1951, in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, where he was raised on his family’s Holstein dairy farm established in 1872.
Graduating second in his class from Denmark High School in 1969, he quickly became known for his dedication to agriculture, excelling in the National 4-H Judging Contest and earning recognition as both High Individual and part of the winning team.
Selner’s academic journey led him to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he completed his BS, MS, and PhD in dairy science and held roles as a teaching assistant and dairy judging coach.
Over his extensive career, he became a national and international authority on dairy genetics, publishing numerous articles in leading dairy publications and providing guidance to organizations across 27 countries.
In addition to his contributions to genetics, Selner was a key figure in founding the Badger Dairy Club, advancing the World Dairy Expo, and serving on the National Dairy Shrine board.
His dedication earned him the 2007 4-E Award from the National Dairy Shrine, among numerous accolades.
David Selner is survived by his siblings and extended family, who will gather with friends to honor his memory on October 30, 2024, at Cotter Funeral Home in Denmark.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Therese Catholic Parish on October 31, with interment in the church cemetery.
David Selner’s legacy of innovation, education, and community service will be fondly remembered by those he inspired and mentored.
