Northville, Michigan – The community is mourning the loss of 12-year-old Declan Carter, who tragically passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024, after being struck by a falling tree during a field trip to the Howell Nature Center.
The heartbreaking incident occurred while Carter, a sixth-grader from Northville, was attending an overnight field trip with his school.
According to officials from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the tree fell unexpectedly, striking Declan in the head and causing fatal injuries.
He was immediately flown to the University of Michigan’s Mott Children’s Hospital, but despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries.
Mayor Brian Turnbull of Northville expressed the town’s deep grief, remembering Declan as a bright, energetic young boy with a promising future.
“Everyone did all they could for Declan, but his energetic life was suddenly halted,” Turnbull stated in a heartfelt letter to residents.
The mayor shared personal memories of Declan, noting his academic and athletic potential, and urging the community to come together in this time of sorrow.
A candlelight vigil is planned in Declan’s honor, with many community members expected to attend in remembrance of his life.
