Dennis Porter, Beloved Floris and Bloomfield Firefighter, Passes Away at 68

Floris, Iowa – Dennis Dwayne Porter, a dedicated local firefighter and cherished member of the Floris and Bloomfield communities, has tragically passed away at the age of 68. Dennis passed on September 19, 2024, at the Hospice House in Ottumwa, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 26, 1956, in Ottumwa to Emmett and Beverly Bridgeman Porter, Dennis was a proud graduate of Davis County High School, class of 1975. He went on to marry Robin Lynne Brooks on August 17, 1979, in a ceremony held in Ottumwa, beginning a marriage that would span over four decades.

Dennis devoted 36 years of his life to serving as a volunteer firefighter, making significant contributions to both the Floris and Bloomfield Fire Departments. He was also actively involved in fire and safety teams at the Bloomfield and Oskaloosa racetracks. His commitment to public service and his community earned him immense respect and admiration.

Outside of his firefighting duties, Dennis was known for his adventurous spirit. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching NASCAR, as well as supporting local dirt track racing. His love for these activities reflected his vibrant personality and passion for life.

Dennis is survived by his devoted wife, Robin, and his children: David Brooks and his wife Danielle of Fairfield, Steven Porter of Floris, and Laura Katzartones of Floris, along with her husband Derek, whom Dennis considered a son. He leaves behind a legacy through his six beloved grandchildren: Michael, Zachary, Olivia, Lucas, Riley, and Gage. He is also survived by two brothers and a sister. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Beverly.

Funeral services to honor Dennis’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, with burial to follow at Floris Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, September 23, from 1:00 p.m., with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in his honor.

The community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant and a loving family man. Dennis Porter’s legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him and those who benefit from his years of selfless service.
