Derrick Morris, a Philadelphia native who had been struggling with schizophrenia for much of his life, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the age of 67 due to heart failure. His sister, Conchita Congo, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, reflecting on her brother’s long battle with mental illness and the isolation it caused.
In her post, Conchita described Derrick’s early life, recalling a time before schizophrenia overtook him. "This photo was taken when he was 19 & had just completed Army Basic Training," she shared, adding that this was before his illness led him to distance himself from family and live on the streets of Philadelphia. Despite not seeing her brother for over 20 years, she expressed her deep love and sorrow for him, hoping he has now found peace.
Tributes and condolences have been pouring in from friends and loved ones. "My sincere sympathy to you and your family," wrote Patricia Wright, while Cheryl Tootie Wright commented, "His suffering is over… you have my sincere condolences."
Derrick Morris’ life was marked by immense suffering due to his illness, but he is remembered with love and compassion by those who knew him.
