Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Dr. Emmanuel Abebrese, a dedicated general surgery resident at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), tragically passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024.
Dr. Abebrese, who joined the MCW residency program in July 2020, had a profound impact on both his colleagues and the community he served.
His passing has left a deep void, particularly within the Department of Surgery, where he was regarded not only for his surgical skills but for his passion for addressing healthcare disparities both locally and globally.
Originally from Ghana, Dr. Abebrese was committed to improving healthcare access in underserved areas, including his home country.
He spent three years in clinical practice before transitioning to a research role with the Division of Pediatric Surgery, where he focused on surgical education and equity in healthcare.
The MCW Department of Surgery expressed their heartbreak, stating, "Emmanuel was an extraordinary person. He will be deeply missed and will always be part of our MCW family."
Social media comments have poured in, with Jen Griller expressing, “So sorry to hear this,” while Arlene Wilson Lee added, “So sad.”
Dr. Abebrese’s legacy of compassion, dedication, and advocacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to work with him and those whose lives he sought to improve.
