Malta – Emanuel Desira, a highly respected former UEFA delegate and Honorary Member of the Malta Football Association (Malta FA), has passed away at the age of 76.
The football community in Malta is mourning his loss after years of dedicated service to the sport, both locally and internationally.
Desira played a key role in Maltese football, not only as a UEFA delegate but also as a referee and an officer responsible for referees’ appointments.
He was known for being a central figure in supporting and guiding local match officials, and his leadership was widely acknowledged by colleagues.
His death was announced by the Malta Football Association on October 16, 2024, as they expressed deep sorrow over the loss of an individual who contributed immensely to the sport.
In a social media post, the Malta FA stated, "Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time."
Many who knew Desira, including colleagues and friends, paid tribute to his character.
Tom A Restall, a fellow member of the Malta FA Referees Board, wrote, “Rest In Peace dear colleague.
We spent many a time together in the MFA Referees Board.”
Emanuel Desira will be remembered as a gentleman and a pivotal figure in Maltese football.
