Former US Veteran and Beloved Physician Dr. Don Mitchell Passes Away at 82

Dr. Don Quinton Mitchell, a respected physician and former US Air Force Brigadier General, passed away on September 19, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on August 11, 1942, in the Mississippi Delta, Don Mitchell was a dedicated community leader, beloved by many for his compassionate service both in the medical field and beyond.

Dr. Mitchell’s journey began in Bolivar County, Mississippi, where he developed a passion for education and athletics. He pursued his studies at Millsaps College, excelling as a starting quarterback and pitcher. It was there that he met his future wife, Mary Sue McDonnell, marking the start of a 60-year partnership characterized by their shared commitment to leadership and service.

After graduating from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1967, Dr. Mitchell devoted 24 years to serving his country, both in the U.S. Air Force and the Mississippi Air National Guard. He retired as a Brigadier General, having earned numerous commendations throughout his distinguished military career. In 1975, he joined the Mississippi Asthma and Allergy Clinic, where his dedication and compassionate care earned him the admiration and respect of his patients.

Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Mitchell was an influential figure in various professional and community organizations. He served as President of the American College of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, and was deeply involved in numerous charitable activities. Known for his joy, humor, and love of music, Dr. Mitchell often shared his love of singing and dancing with his family and friends.

The news of his passing was shared on Facebook, where many expressed their condolences and remembered him fondly. Anita Griffith wrote, “Friends Eunice, Shula, Joyce, Robbie, Barbara on FB with me, Dr. Don Mitchell, a high school friend died today. Our condolences.” Billy Ratliff added, “Prayers. Really nice guy,” and Ginger Prevost Vervaeke commented, “Oh no! I remember him. So sorry.”

Dr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and a large circle of family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held at Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson on September 26, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. Donations in his honor can be made to a charity of choice, reflecting his enduring legacy of service and joy.

He will be remembered as a dedicated physician, a decorated veteran, and a cherished member of his community, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and leadership.
