Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Harold Mace, a respected figure in fire service training and education, passed away on October 10, 2024.
Mace, who served as the Director of Fire Protection Publications (FPP) for 23 years, was instrumental in shaping the future of firefighter training and fire service education across the United States.
Born in Oklahoma City on May 23, 1939, Mace’s career in fire service began in 1969 at Oklahoma State University (OSU), where he rapidly modernized the Oklahoma Fire Service Training program and established the state’s first full-scale practical training facility.
His contributions to the field extended far beyond Oklahoma, as he played a pivotal role in the development of national professional qualifications standards for firefighters and served as chair of the Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications Committee of the National Fire Protection Association.
Under his leadership, FPP grew into the world’s leading publisher of firefighter training materials, generating millions in annual revenue.
Mace’s influence also spanned internationally through his work with the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress, further solidifying his legacy in fire service education.
Colleagues and friends expressed their sorrow on social media, with Mike Wieder, Executive Director of the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA), stating, “We have lost a true icon in the American fire service.”
Many others echoed this sentiment, describing him as a mentor and a giant in the field.
