Johnny Neel, Renowned Nashville Keyboardist and Songwriter, Passes Away at 70 After Massive Heart Failure

Nashville, Tennessee – Johnny Neel, a celebrated Nashville keyboardist and songwriter known for his contributions to the music industry, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024, following a massive heart failure. He was 70 years old.

Neel’s passing has left a void in the hearts of many in the music community. He was surrounded by his wife, Christine, and his daughter, Johnna, at the time of his death. His health had been declining since suffering a stroke in 2019.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware, Johnny Neel’s passion for music began at an early age. His first record, “Talking About People,” released when he was just 12, became a regional success in Wilmington and Philadelphia. Neel later moved to Nashville in 1984, where his career flourished. He played a pivotal role in the Allman Brothers Band, contributing his talent to their music and co-writing songs like “Island” on Gregg Allman’s 1988 album.

In addition to his work with the Allman Brothers, Neel founded the Johnny Neel Band and released two successful independent albums, which showcased his musical and lyrical talent.

Tributes have poured in from friends and colleagues. Musician Niecie Blues shared, “After hearing the news that my beloved producer Johnny Neel passed away yesterday, this means more to me now more than ever. Bad Medicine was the last session I had with Johnny.”

Johnny Neel’s contributions to music will be remembered by many. His legacy will live on through the music he created and the lives he touched.
