Worthing, West Sussex – Kenneth Howard, a distinguished songwriter and a prominent member of PRS since 1964, has passed away at the age of 84.
His death occurred on September 24, 2024, bringing an end to a remarkable career that helped shape the British music scene for decades.
Born on December 26, 1939, in Worthing, Howard’s early exposure to music was influenced by his mother, a concert pianist, and his father’s office Dictaphone, which allowed him to begin composing as a teenager.
His partnership with Alan Blaikley in the 1960s produced numerous hits that defined the era, including The Legend of Xanadu and Last Night in Soho by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich.
Howard and Blaikley’s songwriting talents also extended to Paradise Lost and From The Underworld for The Herd.
Beyond popular music, Howard contributed to television and film, notably scoring for the BBC’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple.
PRS for Music expressed their condolences, stating, "It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Ken Howard, a talented member of our community whose work has inspired generations."
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family, and an obituary is forthcoming.
