Larry Smith, Distinguished Business Leader and Suffolk University Trustee, Passes Away in Boston, Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts – Larry Smith, a respected member of Suffolk University’s Board of Trustees and co-founder of the Nation Safe Drivers Group, passed away on October 17, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of entrepreneurship and philanthropy.

The news of his death has left family, friends, and colleagues in shock, though the official cause of death has not yet been released.

Larry Smith, along with his brother Michael Smith, was a dedicated supporter of Suffolk University, having graduated over five decades ago.

The two brothers remained deeply involved with the university, particularly in athletics, where Larry was a standout player on the men’s basketball team from 1961 to 1965.

He captained the team during his senior year and was known for his defensive skills and rebounding prowess.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Larry Smith’s impact extended into the business world.

He and his brother led the Nation Safe Drivers Group for over 50 years, shaping the auto club and insurance industries, while also making significant contributions to real estate in Florida and Massachusetts.

Their philanthropic efforts at Suffolk included creating an executive case discussion room in the Sawyer Business School and establishing a scholarship for Chelsea High School graduates in honor of Pvt. Sheldon R. Cohen, a Vietnam veteran.

An official obituary is expected to be released by his family in the coming days.
