The community of Big Stone Gap and the Valley Volunteer Fire Department are mourning the loss of Safety Officer Lee Harris, who passed away on October 19, 2024.
Harris was 96 years old and died surrounded by loved ones at his home on Leatherwood Road.
He served both the Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Big Stone Gap Fire Department since 1995, gaining respect for his commitment, warmth, and professionalism.
Throughout his years of service, Harris left a lasting impact on his colleagues, who remember him as a friend and brother.
His funeral service will take place on October 22, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Trinity Memorial Park Chapel.
During this time of grief, Harris’s fellow firefighters expressed their sorrow on social media.
Clay Ross Harris shared, “Join us as we say farewell to a Big Spring legend, our Grandad, Gerald Lee Harris Sr.”
Condolences poured in, with Sue Shults McIntosh offering, “So sorry for yalls loss,” and William Jon Currie adding, “Prayers for you and your family!”
Lee Harris’s dedication and bravery in both his firefighting duties and his personal fight against illness will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
