Waipawa, New Zealand – Murray Stephens, the revered former owner of Waipawa Butchery, passed away on October 11, 2024, at the age of 84.
Stephens dedicated over sixty years of his life to serving the Central Hawke’s Bay community, gaining recognition as a master butcher and an esteemed local figure.
In 1998, he achieved national fame by winning the Supreme Sausage Award at the New Zealand Sausage Competition, a highly competitive accolade that helped put Waipawa on the map.
Murray’s famous beef sausages attracted customers from across the country, solidifying his legacy in the New Zealand meat industry.
Many community members shared fond memories of Murray.
Frank Cresswell recalled, "I remember Murray from way back in my childhood, when it was Stephens & Harper Butchery. Very sad to hear of his passing."
Another former employee, Jason Lee, commented, "Such an amazing man. Worked for him at the butchery for 5 years as my first job after school and during the holidays."
Murray is survived by his wife, Helen, and family members who are mourning the loss of a kind-hearted and dedicated individual.
His legacy as both a skilled butcher and a beloved figure in Waipawa will be remembered by many.
