Tasmania, Australia – Naomi Williams, a highly regarded cyclist and the first Tasmanian woman to represent Australia at the World Championships, tragically passed away this past week at the age of 44.
Williams, also affectionately known as ‘Ren’ or ‘Rennski,’ died by suicide, as confirmed by reports on social media and cycling communities.
She was a multi-discipline athlete who excelled in track, road, mountain biking, and cyclocross, earning admiration for her skills and passion for cycling.
Naomi’s passing has left her friends and the cycling community devastated, with many expressing their sorrow on social media.
Kirsty Baxter shared an emotional tribute, writing, "Naomi Williams…I will forever remember your cheeky, gorgeous smile…your HUGE heart.
Fly high, my cheeky little mate, may you rest in peace."
Naomi was born on January 13, 1980, and her achievements included receiving an Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Scholarship in 2002, which allowed her to race internationally.
Her contributions to the cycling world have inspired countless athletes, especially women.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Boathouse Centre in Invermay.
