Dublin, Ireland – Peter Moore, a prominent disability rights advocate and co-founder of the Centre for Independent Living (CIL), passed away on October 10, 2024, at the age of 58, following a brief illness.
His passing marks the loss of a significant figure in Ireland’s Independent Living Movement, where he played an integral role in empowering people with disabilities to live with dignity and independence.
Moore co-founded the CIL in 1992 alongside other passionate individuals, aiming to create meaningful change for people with disabilities in Ireland.
Known as one of the "Magnificent Seven," Moore’s contributions to the movement included his work with various organizations such as the Forum of People with Disabilities, Greater Dublin Independent Living (GDIL), and Áiseanna Tacaíochta (ÁT), which have had a lasting impact on the disability community.
He was also a distinguished writer, notably penning Rebel on Wheels, a biography that chronicled the life of Liam Maguire.
Moore is remembered fondly by his peers for his compassion, sense of humor, and commitment to mentoring others.
Fellow CIL founder Michael McCabe reflected on Moore’s legacy, stating, “Peter was a brilliant strategist and comrade,” recalling his image with a smile and a pint of Guinness on the armrest of his wheelchair.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Donaghmede, followed by Moore’s burial at St. Fintan’s Cemetery in Sutton.
The disability community extends its condolences to Moore’s family and friends, honoring a life dedicated to advocacy and change.
