West Babylon, New York – Riley Goot, 18, and Michael Desmond, 33, have tragically passed away following a two-car crash that occurred early Saturday morning at the intersection of Great East Neck Road and Railroad Avenue in West Babylon. The accident, which happened around 1 a.m., also left four other individuals seriously injured.
According to Suffolk County police, the crash was caused when Michael Desmond, a resident of Lindenhurst, ran a red light while driving east on Railroad Avenue in a 2017 Kia car. His vehicle collided with a 2025 Kia Seltos that was heading south on Great East Neck Road. Desmond was pronounced dead at the scene.
Riley Goot, who was a recent graduate of the West Babylon School District and a passenger in the Seltos, was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, where he was declared deceased. The community is mourning the loss of Goot, who was remembered as a beloved member of the West Babylon School community.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly, expressed deep sorrow in a statement, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that I write to you today to share the devastating news of a tragic car accident that occurred last night involving recent graduates and members of the extended WB family. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends impacted by this tragedy.”
The driver of the Seltos, 17-year-old Bella Trezza, along with two other passengers, 18-year-olds Austin Trezza and Jack Murphy, also from Babylon, were seriously injured and taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital for treatment. Another passenger, 16-year-old Anthony Pagliuca from West Babylon, was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for medical attention due to severe injuries.
The tragic incident has prompted reactions on social media. Stephen Ruth commented, “Another fatal crash in a red light camera intersection. I will guarantee that that camera played a role in these people dying.” Hector Gavilla highlighted potential road safety issues, stating, “Engineering defects are not being addressed. I have also seen the light turn green too quickly, not allowing enough time to clear the intersections. There are intersections that need to be re-engineered to prevent accidents.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash and are urging anyone with information to contact the First Squad of the Suffolk County Police at 631-854-8152.
Riley Goot’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by the family at a later date.
