Shelley was celebrated for her dedication to the sport and her historic achievements at Assiniboia Downs, where she became the first woman to win the leading trainer title in 2012.
Shelley’s journey in horse racing began with a fateful trip from Regina to Winnipeg, which ignited her passion for the sport and shaped her future as a trailblazing trainer.
She mentored many riders, trainers, and grooms, leaving a lasting legacy in the horse racing community.
Even as she faced her illness, Shelley remained strong, watching her horse, Real Grace, win the Grade 3 Canadian Derby from her hospital bed.
Her fighting spirit was reflected in that victory, symbolizing her resilience and determination.
Janice K Straightnose expressed her condolences on Facebook, saying, “Shelley was a courageous warrior as she battled cancer.
