Brownsburg, Indiana – Shirley M. Thompson, a beloved member of the Brownsburg community and a dedicated educator, passed away on September 17, 2024, at the age of 89. Known for her active involvement in local organizations and her passion for teaching, Shirley leaves behind a legacy of service and kindness.
Shirley began her career in education after graduating from Indiana State University. She initially served as a Physical Education instructor at various high schools in Indianapolis before becoming a cherished kindergarten teacher at Brownsburg Christian Church. Throughout her life, she remained deeply involved in her community, actively participating in the Psi Iota Xi and Zeta Tau Alpha sororities and serving as a Welcome Waggon attendant. Shirley was also a dedicated member of Connection Pointe Christian Church, where she made lasting contributions.
She was predeceased by her parents, Raymond and Wilma Wright, her brother, Richard Wright, and her spouse, Lonnie Thompson. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Elisa (Marc) Rifkind, her son, Blaine (Jinjer) Thompson, along with 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her family, friends, and the many students whose lives she touched will remember her for her warmth, dedication, and compassion.
A funeral service will be held in her honor at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, at Connection Pointe Christian Church in Brownsburg, following a visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. She will be laid to rest at West Ridge Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Connection Pointe Christian Church to honor her life and community contributions.
Shirley’s legacy as a devoted teacher and community member will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
