Morganton, North Carolina – Tragedy struck the community of Morganton on Wednesday, September 18, as authorities responded to a distressing incident at a residence on Stephens Road. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office received reports of shots being fired around noon and quickly dispatched deputies to the scene.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered Rita Hoglen deceased inside the home. Her husband, Gerald Hoglen, was identified as a suspect in the incident. Hours later, Gerald Hoglen was found deceased at another location on Chester Avenue, approximately eight miles from the initial scene. He appeared to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office, along with Burke County EMS and First Responders, were involved in the response and investigation of this tragic event. As of now, the investigation into both deaths is ongoing, and no further details have been released.
The local community has been deeply affected by the loss of both individuals, and many have shared their condolences and memories of Rita Hoglen on social media.
Debbie Hensley expressed her sorrow, stating, “Heartbreaking!!! Rest In Peace Rita. Love you!!! God help her precious family.”
Kale Wright, a former colleague of Rita, shared, “I worked with Rita years ago and am deeply saddened over her passing. She didn’t deserve this.”
