Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Froylan Garcia During Vigil in Little Village, Chicago

Chicago, Illinois – Froylan Garcia, a 32-year-old resident of Berwyn, tragically passed away following a mass shooting during a prayer vigil in the Little Village neighborhood on September 21, 2024. The shooting occurred at approximately 10:08 p.m. in the 2500 block of South Spaulding Avenue, where attendees had gathered to honor a recently deceased individual.

Witnesses reported that a suspect exited a Jeep and opened fire on the crowd, resulting in chaos and panic. While Froylan succumbed to his injuries at Mt. Sinai Hospital, six others were wounded, with all able to transport themselves for medical attention. The injured range in age from 31 to 51 and were reported to be in fair condition.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Froylan’s death, while his family, overwhelmed with grief, has requested privacy during this difficult time.

Community leaders and local officials have expressed their sorrow over the incident. Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez emphasized the need for unity in the face of violence, stating, “This is a community concern, and the 25th Ward office will continue to keep in touch with the block and residents of the 2500 S. Spaulding Ave. block.”

On social media, many have shared their condolences. Rebaby Murry commented, “Prayers for the family,” while Cornelius Polk expressed, “My sincere condolences to the entire family and friends.” Others like Carlos Wells and Cynthia Allen echoed these sentiments, sharing their condolences for Froylan’s family.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and no suspects have been identified at this time. Local authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
