Buckeye, Arizona – In a tragic incident that has left the Buckeye community grieving, 18-year-old Yaritza Vasquez lost her life in a high-speed car accident that unfolded on June 20, 2024.
The fatal crash, which occurred near Verrado Way and Sunrise Lane, involved a Dodge Challenger driven by Nathan Chaidez, also 18, who now faces charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault.
According to the Buckeye Police Department, Chaidez was driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph before he lost control and collided with a tree, resulting in significant damage to the vehicle and severe consequences for its occupants.
Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 15-year-old passenger sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Following an in-depth investigation, which included analysis of the vehicle’s onboard data, witness statements, and physical evidence, Chaidez was formally indicted by a Maricopa County grand jury and surrendered to authorities last Thursday.
Vasquez’s death has cast a somber shadow over her community, where she is remembered as a bright young woman known for her kindness and dedication.
Friends and family gathered in the weeks after her passing for a candlelight vigil, sharing memories and honoring her life.
Community members continue to support her family as they cope with the devastating loss of a beloved daughter, friend, and classmate.
This incident has intensified efforts within Buckeye to raise awareness about the dangers of reckless driving, with local officials and schools prioritizing road safety education for young drivers to prevent future tragedies.
